My mum bought a bunch of ‘tropical’ flowers from her local supermarket and it had this unusual red flower in it. We’d never seen one like it before and have no idea what it is, or where it would naturally grow.

Could be a protea. Indigenous to South Africa. Is it kind of rubbery and firm?
Yes, kind of rubbery and firm.
I think it’s a protea. They are really butch flowers.
So my guess at rhubarb is probably wrong then…
Is there a protean rhubarb??
I’ve been looking at photos of proteas on various websites, and there are some which are quite similar. I like the description of it as a ‘butch’ flower!
